Legacy of the Nusseibeh Family: From Khazraj Origins to Jerusalem’s Heart

The Nusseibeh family, custodians of the keys to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre since the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem in 638 CE, traces its roots to the Banu Khazraj tribe from Medina. Their historical role in Jerusalem, marked by deep religious and social contributions, includes guarding holy sites like the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and al-Aqsa Mosque. Despite hardships, including forced displacement during the Crusades and the 1967 War, the Nusseibehs remain devoted to their city. Today, members of the family continue to honor their legacy while facing the challenges of maintaining their connection to Jerusalem.
