Jerusalem’s Cultural Resilience against Israeli Efforts at Erasure
Jerusalem has always preserved its historical status as a political and social space that is host to cultural activity. Despite the development and transformations the city has undergone on the political and social levels, it has maintained a cultural presence that resisted the Zionist colonial regime’s attempts at erasure and various forms of control since its occupation. This article presents an overview of the cultural scene in Jerusalem, focusing on music and theatre, as well as other forms of expression that emerged since the 1970s. It also draws on the patterns of violence the Zionist colonial regime exercised against the cultural sector to obliterate it and incorporate it within Zionist projects.
