Human Rights Organisations and Civil Society Call on the International Community to Take Immediate Action to Stop the Relocation of Foreign Embassies to Jerusalem, Respect International Law
The United States has long supported Israel's occupation of Palestine, with a significant shift occurring in December 2017 when U.S. President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel and moved the U.S. Embassy there, in direct violation of international law. This decision was met with global condemnation, including a United Nations General Assembly resolution reaffirming that any actions altering the status of Jerusalem are invalid. Despite international opposition, the U.S. proceeded with the embassy move in May 2018, further entrenching Israel’s illegal annexation of Jerusalem. The U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital undermines international law and Palestinians' rights to self-determination. The international community is urged to condemn this move and take action, including imposing sanctions on Israel, to halt its annexation of Palestinian territories.
