General discussion on the address by the Director-General and the Regional Director
Dear Regional Director, Colleagues, I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Ukraine. This Regional Committee Meeting marks the 75th anniversary of our cooperation in the WHO European Region. We convene at a time of significant challenges to global health. The financial crisis affecting WHO on all levels is forcing us to look closely at our priorities and ways of working. We support the ongoing process of ensuring an effective and fit-for purpose WHO - as the cornerstone of the global health architecture, delivering on areas of comparative advantage on global level and in the European region. Therefore, it is time to focus on what’s most important - as reflected in this year’s theme: “Back to basics”.
