From the Depths of Pain, the Project of Hope, Shaffaf, Was Born
Aya Khalil is a Palestinian artist born in Beirut in 1977 and raised across Yemen, Jordan, and Gaza. She later studied media and international studies at Birzeit University. Now based in Jerusalem, Aya founded her art project Shaffaf—meaning "transparent"—in response to the grief of the 2014 Gaza War. Through painting on glass and olive wood, she channels emotion into delicate, evocative art. Though separated from Gaza by distance and conflict, her work remains deeply tied to her homeland and heritage.
