EU Statement — UN General Assembly 4th Committee: UNRWA General Debate
The Candidate Countries North Macedonia*, Montenegro*, Albania*, the Republic of Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina* as well as Armenia, Monaco and San Marino align themselves with this statement. The EU stresses the essential role of the UN and its agencies, including UNRWA, which provides crucial support to the civilian population, including humanitarian aid and basic services, both in the occupied Palestinian territory and the wider region. We stress the need to preserve and respect the humanitarian space. In accordance with international humanitarian law, all parties to the conflict must protect civilians and ensure the safety and security of humanitarian personnel. We convey our condolences to the families of civilians and UNRWA personnel who have been killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023. The EU reiterates its grave concern with the far-reaching consequences of the Israeli legislation on UNRWA for its operations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in Gaza. The The EU condemns any attempt to abrogate the 1967 agreement between Israel and UNRWA or to otherwise attempt to obstruct its capacity to operate its mandate.
