The Fragmentation of Jerusalem’s Eastern Palestinian Towns

The Separation Wall has drastically cut off Palestinian towns like al-‘Izariyya and Abu Dis from Jerusalem, affecting their social and economic fabric. These towns, once interconnected with Jerusalem, now face severe restrictions, including military checkpoints and limited access to essential services like healthcare and education. The wall, completed in 2015, also isolates these areas from vital tourist activities, particularly in al-‘Izariyya, which was historically a gateway for visitors. Ras Kabsa, once a bustling hub of interaction, was economically devastated after the wall’s construction, with businesses closing and traffic congestion increasing. The wall has deepened the fragmentation of these communities, limiting movement and opportunities for growth.
