The Diarnntarach bonfire takes place every year on the 26th of February, right after the annual vigil at Sts. James Cathedral, and a day before the feast of Diarnntarach according to the Gregorian Calendar, which the Armenian Church in Jerusalem follows.
Diarnntarach takes place 40 days after Theophany – Armenian Christmas. That was the day when Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to the temple and presented Him to God.
The tradition of leaping over the fire is a residual Armenian pagan ritual which remained even after Armenia’s adoption of Christianity.
The event has traditionally taken place at the Goverou Bardez, which is poetic, given the situation we find ourselves in today.
Join us on the 26th of February and be a part of Jerusalemite Armenian culture!
