Dr. Mohammad al-Khawaja: “The Trauma in Jerusalem is Ongoing and Spans Multiple Generations”
Living as a Palestinian in Jerusalem imposes significant mental health challenges due to ongoing political, social, and cultural pressures. Residents face intergenerational trauma, restricted movement through military checkpoints, and systemic efforts to erode their national identity. Despite these hardships, Jerusalem’s deep spiritual and cultural significance, particularly the presence of Al-Aqsa Mosque, provides a source of psychological resilience. Mental health services, though available, are often underutilized due to societal stigma and cultural barriers, but efforts by local Arab-run clinics aim to address these needs. While the daily realities of occupation and discrimination weigh heavily, the enduring sense of community and connection to Jerusalem’s sacred spaces offer a foundation of strength and hope for its residents.
