East Jerusalem: Violence against Palestinians during Ramadan prayers, Sabbath of Light and the Flag March, April-May 2023
In April and May 2023, Palestinians in East Jerusalem faced significant violence from Israeli security forces during major public events, including Ramadan prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque, the Christian Sabbath of Light, and the Jewish Flag March. Eyewitness accounts reveal that police both actively participated in and stood by during assaults on Palestinians, journalists, and businesses. Incidents included the use of stun grenades and rubber bullets at al-Aqsa Mosque, physical assaults on participants in the Sabbath of Light, and harassment of journalists covering the Flag March. These events highlight ongoing tensions and human rights violations in the region, as documented by B’Tselem and other observers.
