On Jerusalem Municipality, Ministry of Finance and Civil Administration orders, 73 structures were demolished throughout February, March and April 2024 in East Jerusalem and in adjacent areas lying within the al-Quds District of the Palestinian Authority.
Thirty-seven of the structures were homes, 16 of which were demolished by their own owners on the authorities’ instructions and another blown up by the Border Police as a punitive measure. Twenty-nine of the homes were occupied, and the demolition left 111 people, including 43 minors, homeless. Eight houses were under construction and were meant to house at least 23 people.
Parts of four other homes were demolished by the owners, on the authorities’ orders.
In addition to all these, 36 non-residential buildings were demolished on the authorities’ instructions, 18 of them by the owners.
As far as the Israeli apartheid regime is concerned, the areas it controls are intended to serve the Jewish public only, and Palestinian construction in them is almost entirely prohibited. But Palestinians need homes too, and when they build without permits, as they have no other choice, the regime demolishes their homes. “Law enforcement” is just an excuse to sustain Jewish supremacy.
